finished look? the baseboard molding is rather simple. it is flat, about 3 inches high with a slight decorative bevel at the top. there is no gap between the baseboard and the wood floors. i sort of feel i could get away with not bothering with quarter round molding in this one bedroom where this is the case, but i wonder is quarter round molding considered necessary in this situation to create what is considered a finished look? to me, it looks fine, but i wonder what others might think.

If there are no gaps, I wouldn't think it was necessary. It is more a matter of personal taste than anything else, there certainly is not a requirement for it.

Flat Baseboard Molding

Not necessarily. It's usually referred to as shoe molding. A lot of times it's not used where carpet (exspecially thick) has been laid, because it would pull up unless large nails were used to secure the molding. And, such large nails might just split the shoe molding. There really are no "rules" on how molding is used and where. It's really a matter of choice.
Some trends or standards arise sometimes because of fashion or trying to do it "like the Jones next door"). Also, molding is sometimes chosen to help protect the baseboards from heavy vacuum cleaners.
When used with wood floors, it provides a degree of layering, much like one would see with wood mantels over fire-places. It enhances a simple appearance and desses up something that "may" otherwsie look plain.
And, there are countless types of molding available, other than just 1/4" round-over molding. Good luck

Quarter round isn't used for decoration....it's only used because there is usually a gap there. I personally prefer it without the molding if I can get by without it.

I have worked on high end homes for about 25 years now, which means there are architects involved and they prefer no shoe mold.shoe mold is slightly thinner than quarter round and is made to cover the gap.I personally don't like the look of quarter round. It is used to hide imperfections. if you don't have to don't use it.
