I would think, it is a nice greeting, same as when someone say to me, Aid Mubarak or Happy Hanuka. It is a nice thing to wish another happiness, it's better than bashing them, or avoiding to recognize others beliefs just so as they won't offend others.
What is so offending by wishing some one to be Merry, which means happy!!

To me there is something very magical about Christmas, including the word. I used to work for the government, so I made it a point to say "happy holidays" because I had to, but if someone said Merry Christmas to me, I would say it back.
Many people first ask me if I celebrate Christmas first, then they say it. That's okay too. It respects other holidays too.
I love to hear those words instead of "happy holidays".

Nod too bad, as long as it's at least mid-December. At all times before that, it's more or less annoying, especially when the stores put up their Christmas merchandise right next to--and at the same time as--the Halloween costumes.
Besides, according to most Christians, the Christmas season actually begins on December 25 and lasts for 8 days. It DOES NOT begin on Labor Day and end on December 25, as the retail stores would have you believe.

I take it in the spirit that was given, and say "Merry Christmas" right back with a smile, even though I'm a pagan.

Great! I love the season. Anyone who bristles at a Merry Christmas, I feel sorry for. And even if you don't celebrate the season you should realize that the majority of us do so don't take offense!

If it's offered as sincere good wish for the season, then I think it's great and will offer a friendly greeting in return.
I would do the same with a well-meant "happy holidays", "season's greetings" or any other seasonal greeting.

I welcome the word christmas. I welcome the phrase "merry christmas". I have a "holiday tree" though that I put on my desk at work. Its just a small beaded cone that I put out with my bowl of red and green m&ms.
