My husbands work van had the transmission go out, so he took it to a "friend of a friend" to fix it. Because of this he hasnt been able to work as much. So he gave this guy $1000 cash and his truck has just been sitting there for 3 weeks. Now my man cant get ahold of this guy to even see what the heck is going on. We NEED that work truck. it is our livlihood, the only way we can live and make money. Any advice? This guy is illusive and shady.

First get the van back, as fast as possible. I'm going to bet your husband didn't get a receipt. If not then kiss that $1,000 good bye. If he did then he could take the guy to small claims court and try to get his money back. I have do doubt that he would get a judgment against the guy, but collecting is another matter.

Now after you get the van back take it to an established, reputable shop and have the work done, yes it might cost more then the $1,000 he paid the guy, but he paid the guy and is out a grand and still doesn't have the van working.

Oh, if he didn't get a receipt have him send a letter to the guy demanding back his $2,000. Hopefully the guy will write back saying he only gave him a $1,000. That would almost be as good as a receipt. I've seen it work before. I would also enclose a self address stamped envelope, it might encourage him to write back.

Good luck

I agree with the first poster...if you aren't too worried about the money, which more than likely you probably won't get back, I would report the truck as stolen to your local police. Good luck in getting it back, and never do business with friends...that is my motto...always go to a reputable business. =)

yes on a couple of answers...send a registered letter to him telling him you are going to report it stolen...or just go ahead and report it stolen and give the police the address and mention the thousand dollars. Maybe you will get both back.

good luck.

send something like a registered or certified letter...
if you can get an address...make the person think you will
take them to court. often that works. start getting official.

I always have this problem when I pay ahead. It NEVER works. I'm afraid you'll have to go to small claims court.

my first reaction would be to report it stolen.
probably not the best idea, but it's a thought as a last resort.
