Removing cigarette smoke odor from a car
Whether you are a smoker, or you have just bought a car from an ex-smoker, there are fortunately things you can do to remove and control the cigarette smoke odor in a vehicle.
First, add baking soda to the ashtray. Remember to remove it frequently and replace if fresh baking soda, especially if using it as an ash tray.
Next, find a scent of fabric softener sheets that appeals to you, and place them under the seats. Change when they lose scent.
Lastly, you can use Febreze on the upholstry, including the ceiling of the vehicle if it is a fabric. Here is a recipe to make your own Febreze.
These things will all help control and eliminate the pesky odor from cigarettes in your car.
Make your own Febreeze
In a 32 ounce clean spray bottle, place 4 tablespoons of Ultra Downy fabric softener (you can chose the scent you like best, or use liquid fabric softener you already own.) Then fill the spray bottle with water, leaving about an inch from the top. Gently shake, then use just as you would use febreeze.
As with all cleaners, spot test before spraying on any fabric or furniture.

I would use three steps to getting the odor out. One has already been suggested. First is the obvious. Clean the heck out of the seats, carpet, windows, and yes, even the trunk (airflow returns from there as well) and such with standard cleaners, upholstery cleaner, carpet cleaner, glass cleaner and what have you. Then the Febreeze sounds like a good idea, but I have never done that myself. My third idea and the one that I have used extensively in cars, my house, and RV's is an Ozone machine. You can either buy one like I did or rent one from some rental houses. It makes high levels of Ozone that are fabulous at destroying odors, bacteria, etc. You put the machine in the "clean and dry" car and close the windows most of the way up leaving an inch or so on passenger and driver's window. (I leave only an inch myself) then leave the machine run for at least 24 hours. Unplug it from outside the car (Ozone will burn the heck out of your eyes and nose if in large concentrations like will be in car at that point Then let the car sit overnight as the ozone will actually turn into oxygen as it breaks down in the car. That also helps with the odor removal. When you open the car doors the following day to air it out you will be able to still smell some ozone but won't be enough to give you troubles. I usually open the doors at that point and just let the car air out on it's own for at least 30 minutes. Ozone machines are often used in large models to remove smoke smells from fire damaged buildings and work on practically any odor out there except stuff such as urine. It will work on that if you use the special deodorizers on the affected spots first that break down the enzymes first and then the ozone will remove all of it. If the car is old and heavily smoked up you might want to let the machine run for more than one day, but I have not seen this required on any I have worked on. Also works on RV's, houses, etc. You can do a "room by room" treatment of a house and still occupy it providing that the treated room is closed off and the central air or heat is not used as that would circulate the ozone and interrupt the treatment. Good luck with it either way.
The place I got my Ozone machine is:

There are also dozens of others on the internet selling similar. I liked these folks because they had been around awhile and carry replacement parts such as the screens used to generate ozone.

Try mixing some cheap kind of vodka with water in a spray bottle. About a cup of vodka and half a cup of water. Might smell like booze for a little while but the smoke will be less offensive. After, I always put a fabric softener sheet under the seats and in the cabin filter (the one inside the car, usually at the passengers feet) Hope that helps!

I have found that the product "Febreez" does the best to remove odors, even cigarettes!! Whayt I do Is spray all of the seats in the car, the flooor , the ceiling, anything covered in fabric, then let it dry. When you come back it should smell nice and fresh.

An old Antiques dealer taught me this trick years ago and it works. You can put roasted whole coffee beans in the car - front and back seats. The aroma of the coffee is wonderful and it really gets rid of the odor.
Also, coffee beans are great for inside drawers that are musty or in closets that are musty, etc.
Another tip: you can use that spray Febreze fabric odor spray works well too.

Go to a professional detailer. They'll detail the interior. It's alot of work, but well worth it. Make sure you go to a good one. I wouldn't do it myself, but you might being young. My detail shop would remove the seats and completely shampoo the entire interior. Seats, carpet, and panels. Don't forget, if your car is equiped with air filters in your vents, you need to replace them too.
