Yes I think he is. There is no doubt that the Big Diesel is deteriorating with injuries and age, and Yao has been putting up monstrous numbers lately and I dont think anyone can guard him in the paint.
And for Jeff S' answer, Duncan is a forward-center. He rarely plays the 5 spot, but he could be monstrous in terms of defensive intensity, on rare occasions that is. Anyway, Spurs-Rockets matchup is on Wednesday and this should be exciting.

Yao is the Best center...NOW. I'm from Houston and love the Rockets, but only til recently Yao has started to show he's not afraid. As the season goes on look to Yao getting more hard core. BUT, I have to admit too...if you matched him up with Shaq during his prime, Yao would get broken in half. Everyone has to pass the torch. Does anyone remember when Hakeen schooled Shaq and the Magic.

Yao is going to have to do this for a couple years before I give him that distinction - and he'll probably have to win a time or two also.
Are we forgetting Tim Duncan? He doesn't put up the monstrous numbers, but can when he needs to. And he is still a better defensive player.

Due to their ages, health, and the different stages in their respective careers, I believe so. Shaquille is producing "pedestrian" numbers while Yao Ming has solid rebounding and scoring numbers.
Hope this was helpful.

The traditional Center position is being phased out more and more, look at Atlanta and Phoenix. Stoudemire may be the best center in the game today.

Absolutely!
First of all, he is the tallest player in the league. He is an excellent shooter with good range and once he faces the basket and holds ball over his head there is very little you can do to alter his shot. I think he will be averaging 20+ points for years to come.

Yao may be putting up good numbers.....but he is nowhere even in shaq's league......plus shaq is beyond his prime so it's stupid to compare them.

He is. He might not be as big and strong as Shaq but he's fast, he can make his free throws, he's smart, he has post moves, he has a soft touch, and he is just plain big.
