I really want to run an 8k in about a week and a half. My lungs are in shape, but my shins and calfs hurt and the pain is too much to run with at about 4k. I stretch my calfs well before and after runs, but I don't know of any shin stretches. Soaking in Epsom salts hasn't worked. I've never had any training in the correct posture of running. Is there a place on the web where I could find some good diagrams and videos showing correct posture? Any other quick tips to get rid of this?

Shin splints are usually caused from not stretching the calf's muscles , since they act like a shock absorber for the shins, but you should also look at your shoes , you may need a shoe with more cushion that what you are wearing. I'm not sure you will heal in time to to that 8k, www.runnersworld.com has lots of tips on running and how to deal with injuries

Muscle cramps in this case sounds more like a need for more potassium in your system and more water. Bananas are an excellent source for the potassium, but you can take it in pill form in case you don't like bananas. Yes, I know, who doesn't like bananas? Increase your water intake the day before a race and continue with your stretching regimen.

potassium deficiency sounds like. I used to get them when i ran 5k. I just finished a fluid and electrolyte course in pharmacy school and it sounds indicative to K+. Bananas have potassium but easier with a KCl supp.

i have had shin splints and calf cramps, my chiropractor would tape my feet to give support to my arches in my feet and told me to rest....

Get fitted for arch supports, I know it sounds crazy, but it worked for me! Good luck!
