Your own imagination is a very good starting point. It would also be a good idea to read as many other fantasy and sci-fi writers as you can get your hands on, and draw on their ideas and concepts. In addition to that, it is helpful to draw on real-world reality to add a sense of fact to your fiction. Dan brown did this in the DaVinci Code to the extent that he had people believeing his fiction. It was hard for the average reader to tell when the line was crossed between fact and fiction, and thus made for a more convincing story.

So I would say you have three sources:
(1) Your own creative imagination
(2) The imaginations of other writers
(3) Factual reality

If you are planning on doing a Fantasy with bits of historical pieces in it, its probably best to research. I found this out from an Author who writes that sort of stuff on eharlequin.com. Personally, making your own world is more fun though.

Go for it. That's what I do. Probably you should go with fantasy, some sci fi needs facts to back it up. Horror is good too.

If you must make up your own world, it's best to do it in fiction/fantasy/sci-fi because then stupid critics can't bash you for not having accurate facts. and even if they do, just put it down to creative license.
I do the same thing but I find that when describing directions or landscape, it helps me to draw out a rough floor plan of whatever i'm talking about. I.E. In one of my stories, my main character is trying to navigate her way out of a building, so I drew the floor plan out to help keep her from doubling back on herself or suddenly coming to a door that leads to nowhere.
Just try to keep things on a level that people who like to over analize things can follow, (like the people who map out Hogwarts by JKR's directions *they turned laeft at so-in-so's portrait...*)
Good luck with your story, I want to read it, post it on Freewebs.com (accounts are free) and e-mail me the link! I always love adding writers to my friends list! If you want to read mine, look for Sondadarya on freewebs!
Hope this helped

see .... u can try to create your own world in ur mind..
but...it will be the reflection of this present world only
means inner reality is projection of outer world in to u....

ok
now if u want to have sci-fi things ur left with 3 ways

1. Dream well -see unusual things and goto sleep...A nightmare will help u in creativity....

2. Have some legally bought narcotic... just see things in different perception

3.Do meditation... its the superior form of 2nd step

Sounds like a GREAT idea for a writer... Just don't take drugs to "enhance" that world. What you do need to have handy is a grammar reference. All written form looks much better if people can actually understand it.

Go for it.... The imagination is a terrible thing to waste... Every invention started with an idea made up in someone's head. Be creative and enjoy! Have a blessed day.

You don't need any other sources than your own imagination. Why borrow tendencies and styles from other persons' creativity? That would compromise your originality and the naturality of your work.

nope. i do it all the time. You'll find that it adds to your creativity, and your books will be more entertaining, because if you can get your readers to believe a fantasy world, you can get them to really put themselves into your story. good luck with the writing!
