The "W" stands for an abbreviation of the limited broadband allowed for the stations in that prefix.

It indicated the station is east of the Mississippi river. All stations west start with the letter K. I know there's no logic in that but then it's setup by the government what do you expect?

Yeah, what he said. Notice too that all stations West of the Miss. River start with "K". As to exactly why, that I do not know. Best contact the FCC.
