How do I transfer recorded shows from my Pioneer-533 DVR to my computer?

I've recorded TV shows with my Pioneer DVR-533 and would like to transfer them to my computer to remove the intro, extro and commercials. I thought I would've been able to do this by burning them on a DVD-RW and dump them on the computer, but my computer keep saying "Please insert disk in drive" when I try to open the content of the DVD, although I can read the DVD from an application that plays DVDs.

I've tried both "VR Mode" and "Video Mode" (what's the difference anyway?!) and I get the same result.

There are two ways you can transfer the shows:
1. The way you were (unsuccessfully)trying. It sounds like you were just putting in the DVD and then trying to open it like you would open a computer file. Before you do that, you need to "rip" the DVD. Common programs that can do this include, but are not limited to: Nero, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Rip it For Me, AnyDVD, and DVD Ripper. Freeware editions of most of these are easy to find.
2. The Pioneer 533 DVR has many different outputs. If you have a capture card for your computer, run the S Video cable to your capture card and capture the show while it plays on your recorder. You will have to use a DVD authoring program to do this. Pinnacle Studio, Ulead Videostudio, and Adobe Primere Elements are common Capture/Editing/Authoring programs but there are many others. Try trolling for freeware and see what you can dig up.
