Best using silicone in a silicone gun. Dont squeeze the trigger too hard. When u've done that, smooth over it with a wet finger then leave to dry completely b4 using the shower or sink! Practice makes perfect! I've learnt all this since i've become single and now have to do jobs myself!! Good luck! X

Not sure I understand your question, because normally one doesn't put mastic or mortar around a sink or shower. Where the tile meets the sink, or any aplliance, normally it is sealed with caulk or other sealant. This allows slight movements without cracking mastic, plus it seals it from water seepage.
If you could add details, perhaps I could furnish more helpful comments. Good luck

It all starts with cutting the tube of your caulking material correctly. You should keep it to a fairly small opening for fine work, and it should be cut at a 45 degree angle. Position yourself so you can lay down as continuous a strip as possible, using a constant pressure on the gun. Finish the bead off by wiping with a damp finger, and clean off your finger between each swipe.

Carefully use the mastic gun and ensure just enough is deposited. Then lick your finger and fairly quickly draw it along the sealant. This will smooth it down.

I find the best way is to run a strip of 1" masking tape either side of the joint to be sealed, apply an even beed of the sealant, allow a couple of minutes for the sealant to set, then peal the masking tape off, this will leave a perfect straight line every time

run a line of mastic around the ceramic and then use your finger to create a nice clean edge.

Really cut the tube carefully, place as long a run as possible and as quickly yet as carefully as possible, and then whip along the run with your finger or other suitable edging tool.
I don't know where I got it from, probably from B+Q but it works a treat, it is a rubber finger type thingy.

masking tape along both side of the edge in question helps control mess then using a sillicone gun apply a nice even bead allong the edge try not to apply to much then either spit on your finger and gently run it along or use a damp cloth or tissue and also run along the bead lightly to give a nice flat even finish then when dry remove the masking tape and hopefully you will have a nice clean seal...
