the baby is taking up so much room in your belly that everything is being pushed together. I had such a problem with that! My doc said for me to sit as upright as possible and top sit near an open window or a fan, and that helped me so much! I always felt like i was suffocating!

Actually, it's the diaphragm. This is the muscle that divides your body cavity into the thoracic (containing the lungs) and abdominal (where the baby is) cavities. As the baby grows, it increases the pressure in the abdomen thereby pushing everything, including the diaphragm. Thus, the thoracic cavity becomes smaller and the lungs cannot expand as much. This results in your difficult breathing.

In the 3rd triemster of pregnancy, your baby has its biggest growth spurt. Organs become crammed as baby needs more room. The pressure from all of your regular body contents plus baby tends to put a lot of pressure on the lungs.

Because there's not enough room for both lungs and baby if it's a big one. It also depends if the mother used to smoke. I never had that breathing problem. But I guess it's diferent for each one.

The uterus pushes the diaphragm up leaving less space for the lungs to expand. The same thing happens in obesity, and some of them die. Pickwickian syndrome.
