The term is Sand Art. Buying the colored sand can be expensive. Some people actually color salt and use it.
What we did when we were running a Sand Art business, was get a bag of white silica sand and dyed it with various things. We tried liquid food coloring which worked the best. What didn't work so well was wet crepe paper. Tempra wasn't so good either, because it made the sand too wet. After we colored the sand, we dried it in the microwave.
By the way - silica sand is not for sand boxes. After we filled the bottles, we tamped the bottles so the sand would settle, and keep filling it with sand to the top of the bottle. We did this until no more sand could be added. Then we glued the caps on so that the bottles could not be opened.

Ventor the Island of White for coloured sand.

Cannot help you with the name though it was very popular in Victorian times. I used to have a sand painting of the Forth Railway Bridge that crosses the Forth of Firth. Brilliant peice of hand craft.

Re the above answer..no disrespect but you should use small lump crystals of sea salt and not ordinary salt as any the dampness will dissolve it.

I think it's called shadow painting as you paint in reverse.

Sand Art....I believe. Not exactly an Art form. You can buy the sand at Wal-Mart or Jo-Ann's. Also, you can find recipes on the internet about how to create colored sand.

in view that Eden replaced into on the junction of four rivers i might want to anticipate it to be an rather fertile river valley. purely 2 of those rivers in common and likely over grazing and different undesirable practices made Iraq what that is on the prompt, we do not recognize the position the different 2 rivers are, so that is everywhere that the Tigris and Euphrates are. FYI Adam potential "guy" in historic Aramaic. { (Genesis 25:25 the first to go back out replaced into purple, and his total body replaced into like a hairy garment; so that they named him Esau. [ Esau may mean hairy ; he replaced into also said as Edom, meaning purple. ] Genesis 25:30 He reported to Jacob, "speedy, enable me have a number of that purple stew! i'm famished!" I rubbed colored chalk into salt and used an empty spice jar. I used a skewer to make "waves" in each color layer. I still have it from 25 years ago!
