While I don't agree with your MIL, I think red can be a bit much for a job interview. Bright colors can distract the person conducting the interview, and when it's time to review all of the applicants, you don't want him/her to remember you as "The lady with the red nails." In most guides about how to dress for an interview, shorter nails that are well shaped and filed with only a pale color are recommended.
You want the focus on your face, your resume/application, and your own attributes as a person. Things like the skills you bring to the job, past education and/or job experience are what is important.
When you distract from that by trying to look sexy, or trendy, they aren't going to focus on you as a person. You can almost never go too professional or too conservative for an interview, because you won't have a chance of offending anyone dressed like that. Most professionals recommend against bright colors anywhere noticeable, skirts that are too short, tops that show cleavage, midriff baring tops, anything flashy (like sequins) or too trendy.
Many times you are judged by your appearance, so looking too edgy can make a bad impression. You may not get taken seriously by the interviewer, and as a result, you don't get the job.

My personal opinion seems to differ from most of the answers so far. Red nail polish is a very classic look and I don't see a problem with wearing it on an interview. The only things I would recommend, it make sure the rest of your appearance is on the professional side and without a doubt, make sure your manicure is perfect. Since red is such a bold color, any chips and scratches would be very noticeable and may be distracting. Also, if you are nervous during your interview, don't fiddle with your hands. Again, the bright color could bring attention to that and may indicate to your future employer that you don't feel confident in your abilities.

When in doubt, err on the side of caution. If it were me, I'd skip it and use a nice, neutral color.
However, the key here is how well you're presenting yourself. If your nails are not long, your cuticles are pushed back, your nails are filed, well-shaped and the polish is not chipped or smudged in any way, then you might be able to get away with it. Again, though - when in doubt, go conservative!
Good luck with the interview!

A bright red is not recommendede. Not because of what your mother in law said but when interviewing you should be on the muted side of shades, french manicure, pale neutral colors or even a red that is not shocking to cmpliment you and your outfit. Good Luck

Red is fine so long as the rest of your look is tasteful...Like a simple colored suit (black, gray, dark blue, etc) and your hair is not a wild color.
My mom says the same thing as your mother in law. So maybe some other older people may feel the same way. so maybe to be safe you should stick with something lighter.
I still prefer a light color or a french manicure.

Yeah, don't be yourself, like everyone else says, that would be silly! You should definitely be someone you're not! You know, fake it. You don't want the people you may be working with think you might have a colorful personality! Even though it is almost 2007 & the color black on your finger tips is perfectly acceptable!?!? I say.....You do what you want, but you really should not go thru life letting other people tell you what color of polish to wear!

I personally would tone it down for an interview. You want the interviewer to notice YOU and your ACCOMPLISHMENTS...not the color of your nail polish. Contrary to popular belief, something as simple as red nails could be a serious distraction for an interviewer - If you want to "get noticed", try smiling and being enthusiastic! :) Good luck!

Not if you want to be taken seriously. You don't need to wear anything flashy that makes you standout. If you do people could assume that you are trying to stand out with your looks because your trying to hide the fact that you might not be right for the job. This may not be true, but they don't know that, and it would be better to let them find out you have a lot to offer by talking to you.

Is the interview at a nail salon? then it's OK. If it is for a job in an office, better to go with a french manicure, like pink, or mauve
