* On many fine old buildings:
In architecture the frieze is the wide central section part of an entablature and may be plain or decorated with bas-reliefs.

* In beautiful homes or (check out interior design magazines and books)
In interiors, the frieze of a room is the section of wall above the picture rail and under the crown moldings or cornice.
By extension, a frieze is a long band of painted, sculpted or even calligraphic decoration in such a position, above eye-level.

Frieze decorations may depict scenes in a sequence of discrete panels. The material of which the frieze is made may be plasterwork, carved wood or other decorative medium.

In an example of an architectural frieze on the facade of a building, the octagonal Tower of the Winds in the Roman agora at Athens bears bas-relief sculptures of the eight winds on its frieze.

A frieze is an 'art-form' like a painting or sculpture mainly seen on buildings.

Mostly a frieze is a band of sculpture along the topside of a wall. (not on top, you can see it from the ground) Both indoor as outdoor.
A classic frieze looks like this:

Or a bit less classic:

Also any decorative border (wall carpet in a room, around a pool or anyplace) can be called a frieze.

A frieze is a band of pictures or sculptures around the top of a building. If you look at any of the great cathedrals, around the
top of the outside of the cathedral is a circle of sculptures portraying various biblical events. This is a frieze. I believe (if I remember correctly) that the city of Florence, Italy is famous for its Renaissance friezes.

I believe that a frieze is a type of carpeting. We have it in our living room and master bedroom. It has been really wonderful and easy to maintain.
