I live in Pittsburgh, but go to visit family in Charleston Sc frequently. It takes me about 12 hours to drive there and I always do it in one day. Wonderfule place to escape the cold of western pa. If thats too far I suggest trying the Outer Banks of NC. about 8 or 9 hours to get there from the burgh. If you go there, go far south on the banks, the Northern part around kitty hawk is very very touristy which i hate. At the bottom is Ocrakoke Island accesable only by the free ferry. Lots of cheap places to stay and while its a little touristy, its still a nice mix of local flavor. The Jolly Roger Pub and Marina on Ocracoke is my #1 favorite place to eat in the country. They unload seafood right off of the boats into the kitchen. If i didnt have to work through thanksgiving thats where i would go. Screw the turkey, give me a Jolly Roger fried clam sandwich.

Maybe I'm a little biased, but I think you should go to New York City. I think everyone should visit the city at least once.

go to princeton west virginia. My daughter in law lives there and it is a great place, nice weather and just the right size to have everything and not be overwelmed.
