Reward yourself for doing things. E.g. you want to buy a new CD, but you also need to do your xmas shopping. Tell yourself you can only buy that CD once the shopping is done and you have bought wisely. If you do this when you do buy that CD it will sound nicer because you are not carrying that xmas shopping worry anymore.

I think motivation is the key. The more passionate we feel about something then we will find it easier to discipline ourselves.

We are conditioned to think of discipline as 'hard work', 'boring' and full of deprivation amongst associations. So no wonder we shy away from it, if we aren't naturally a disciplined person.
