AM = "ante meridian"
PM = "post meridian"

ante is Latin for "before" and post is Latin for "after"
meridian is: ME < L merīdiānus of noon, equiv. to merīdi(ēs) midday

So the meridian is the imaginary line that runs through Greenwich that establishes universal time at midday - hence AM = before noon and PM = after noon.

Make sense?
