I have 2 suggestions. The smartest wisest thing to do is get a free paypal account. Paypal is a go-between in a way. For example.

Rather than you buying the gifts and then having to pay directly to the seller.

It would work like this..
You pay PAYPAL then paypal pays the seller. Paypal is trusted all over the world so you can buy wherever. Paypal is free.

Go to http://www.paypal.com and sign up there. It takes 1 week to set it up so hurry if your nephews b-day is in 2 weeks.

Second suggestion. Go to http://www.ebay.com
These are PRIVATE sellers, most of them and also some companies. The private sellers use Paypal alot and we have bought and sold there.

I think what you need is a better way to see what your question really is, that applys to many life events for everyone, so since international trade is a major event employing many people there is probably a name for: people shopping in the UK over the internet with purchases having a destination of another country. PERHAPS PAYPAL would help here. Or searching with a shopping site that only deals with US distributors. Bestbuy, and major US stores like Wal-Mart lets and Home Depot, and Lowes let you shop from inventory at the zip code of the store you want to shop from (the zip code where the person lives).

There are thousands of stores in the US that will take your cards, i'm amazed your struggling because i never have.

Many will have a contact number so you could give them a ring to take a telephone payment prior to delivery or ask if there would be other ways to pay.

It might be worth looking for companies which you are familier with, British companies who have stores over in America like Marks and Spencer.

Ebay as suggested as above, use the Power Sellers with masses of really good feedback, and then you know you'll be getting boxed brand new goods.

Have a look at this Yahoo link:

Why don't you go to ebay and search the US sellers. Explain that you live in the UK but want the item posted to the US, this way you'll save on postage and still have a lot of choice.

You must have other relatives over there. Can't you look on the American sites decided what you want and get one of your relatives in the states to buy it on your behalf and either send them them the dollars of repay them when they come to the UK
