My boyfriend's flash drive just won't work. He's trying to transfer files from his old computer (Windows 98) to the new one (Windows XP). He's had the drivers installed twice but the old computer still can't read it. Anyone can help? Or is there an easier way to transfer massive amounts of files without having to resort to outside help? Pretty please?

Sometime the old beaters just won't do it.

If the Win98 system can't burn CD's, the only other option would be to pop the hard drive out of the Win98 system and connect it to the XP systems. If he's not comfortable doing that himself he might need a hand.

To make the flash drive work under Windows 98, you need to install the appropriate driver. Windows XP would detect and mount the flash drive automatically, but Windows 98 won't. Download and install the driver from the flash drive manufacturer's website.

Okay when you have installed the drivers you have to reboot the computer with win98, inorder for it to work.

If that still doesnt work, goto the control panel from the start menu > then double click on the system icon.

This will show a list of devices installed on your computer, find where it says usb. If it has an exclamation mark by it, then it means that there is a problem. right click so you see the Properties option. Then click on the button that says re-install driver. Then reboot then all should be okay.

Hope this helps...

Hmm... that's strange. Most flash drives work fine after the drivers are in place. Try consulting the manufacturer's documentation/website to see if there are any issues with the device.

The only smart way to it, in my opinion, would be to blow less than $20 on a CD burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106996 or much, much better, $30 on a DVD burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106013 so that it can be used in the new computer, once you've burned the files to disk.
