Opera and grand opera involve music, singing, and acting, and often rivalry in love. The Met in New York and La Scala in Milan are two of the leading producers, as Verdi and Rossini are leading composers. Soap opera is typically a radio or television serial in many episodes, called "soap" I suppose because it can be spun out like soap bubbles, and sometimes frothy like soapy water. It turns on family, friends, and the love interest is strong. The cast of characters can run into dozens, with some moving away or dying in the course of the series. One can listen to it to it while cooking or ironing. Every nation has its favorite soap operas, and some can go on for decades. A certain kind of novel can be, unkindly, described as "soap".
