What goes on in the name of justice and protection of individual rights does sometimes boggle the mind. I am not a supporter of "cruel or unusual punishment", and I think that drug addicts in prison should have access to rehabilitation programs, but I certainly don't think prison should be fun. I am sure that many prisons are not fun, but it is not only in Britain that one hears of such situations. It is probably occurring in most, if not all, developed/western countries. Some prisons in Canada are more like country clubs than prisons. Possibly the pendulum has swung a little too far, and when that happens we have to believe that it will swing back. I do have a few worries about innocent people who have been convicted (we have had quite a few in Canada), so in my mind there is no easy solution.
Thanks for the question. It made me think.

OK you really need to get the facts and stop reading the sensational press, The compensation is for prisoners that are not offered help with their drug problem and left to suffer. You may think that it is a just punishment for them but some of them wish to kick their habit and are given no help and placed in prisons that have illegal drug use within its walls. Prisons should be a place of reform and not only punishment but within the UK there is little reform which is why the re-conviction rate is around 54%.

I disagree. All drug addicts in prison should be given all the drugs they want, and more to the point some they don't want. How about testing drugs on child murderers, drug dealers etc instead of on animals? Think of the money the country would save. They would od and that would get rid of them.

The prisons are becoming a home from home, without the cost of supporting a home. No wonder they're overflowing; criminals are probably encouraged towards more criminality by the benefits the prison system offers.

We have 3 times more people in prison than any other European country and Labour government is selling us down the river. Prison is supposed to be a harsh punishment for being a menace to society i believe when you enter prison you have no rights.
Also for a nation being run into the ground with too many prisoners severe action must be taken bring back the death penalty. I bet that in 10 years crime will either dramatically drop or wed be a smaller country either way I don't care I don't want to pay for theses low lifes.

This is why I think life is a simulation, cos the real thing can't be this pathetic and sick. Lets hope those drug addicts die and stop wasting space.
Dan:
You again!!?? Are you a polititian or something? I assume you are only joking otherwise. Cos you can't defend them. Oh, and he said he wanted no do-gooders to answer. You fail.

Government hung up on their own legislation, I'm afraid. No doubt well intentioned, but like so much Blair has done, not thought through!
