first u need to know the exact amount of total memory that u have. if u got xp home edition, on the taskbar, right click and select task manager. the task manager will show u how many physical memory that u have plus the usage of application and for system.

internal video cards can eat your physical memory. if ur task manager shows u that u have a 256mb ram, u can choose to upgrade the total memory. scan your computer to identify if u got viruses because worms and trojan horse program also eats ur memory.

Windows will not even run on 13mb of ram, so it is incorrect. Now, if it is saying that you have 13mb of Free Ram, that is a different story. 13MB of Free Ram would mean that the other 243mb is being used by other system processes. You really should upgrade to at least 512mb of ram and you will see a definite improvement in the speed of your system.
That being said, a virus is probably not responsible for the machine being low on ram. It definitely could be responsible for the machine now slowing down, but it is likely not using up your ram.
Try downloading http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 a free anti-virus software.

Could be the program has mis-identified the memoryinformation, yuo fried your memory, the infection isn't cleaned out of the system, or something is running hidden in the background processes that is using up all your memory.

go to www.download.com and do a search for "Security Task Manger"

Run the program and see whats really causing the memory loss.

if your present day-day rig truthfully has 256mb RAM suitable now, that's thoroughly not probably that it could desire to deal with 2GB. consistent with hazard on the very maximum 1GB. yet particular, in case you're able to enhance from 256, it will make a international of distinction. only confirm you get the dazzling form of RAM on your motherboard. attempt calling your pc's producer and asking them what form it takes.

Open up Task Manager (right-click on bottom bar and click Task Manager) and click on the Processes tab. Look at the list and find out which ones are using up the most Mem Usage. After you find it, look up the Image Name on http://www.processlibrary.com/ to see if there's an issue with it.

running windows xp on a 256mb ram will eventually make your system slow, even if you have a software to free memory, especially if you have other installed softwares.
best solution is to increase ram to 512mb or recommendable at 1gb!
please also run an antivirus with anti spyware real time protection like trend micro. but if you have 256mb of ram, cleaning your pc of viruses/ spywares can do little to make it faster.
but you can do try these free cleaning websites:

Well, a lot of the 256 Mb will be used by windows itself and the programs you run. So I recommend you get more RAM. 1024 Mb should be fine.

SOMETHING has to be running to eat up that much ram. Use task manager to examine running programs. Kill anything that looks unfamiliar.
