In many firms the Secretary serves many roles, including the informational role of Business Intelligence Officer. Do not underestimate how this can be a stepping stone in your career. Remember that in small companies everyone wears many hats. These hats are not all directly related to the title on the business card.
If you desire another position and have thus far only been offered secretary positions then it is time to revise your resume. You may wish to get some practice with interviewing skills specific for your target industry and position. Many universities have career planning and advice offices. That might be a good place to start to spruce up your presentation.

Secretary work is not what it used to be at many places. You dont just type up your bosses emails anymore. Now it is a job that involves scheduling planning, finance, and good communication skills. It is often a great place to start and work your way up in a company.

It pays the bills until something closer to your dream comes along. It's a respectable job. Not everyone is lucky enough to get their dream job - ever. Good for you for wanting to work in the field you're passionate about, but if you can't find that immediately, secretarial work will at least give you a paycheck.

There are a lot of people who do whatever to survive until they find their dream job. How many waitresses and secretaries are hopeful actors and actresses. How many people take different jobs because each job adds a skill that they know they will need when they find the ideal job.

How are you paying your bills? If you do not mind me asking? Do you need the job for this, if not don't bother. Do soemthing you want to do, we spend so much time at work that you should enjoy the job. My partner went from job to job for the last few years and now he found his ideal job, and loves it, and its the longest job he's been in. I have found too that being in a job you dont like is unsatisfying and depressing, I know now from the crappy jobs that I have done what I want to do, so in some ways it may help you see what it is you want to do, but if you laready know then go and get it! Good luck.
