I don't think it ever explained why he changed his name.

The heat was to empahsize the need for the drinks they had, and to set the scene. I could just visualize all of them sitting around, with no AC, fanning themselves to keep cool, and wanting to be anywhere but where they were.

Daisy never could make up her mind. And she wasn't a brave enough person to give up what she had. She is typical of all people in this day and age who are having affairs. Change is hard for people, and although what she had with Tom was bad, she wasn't willing to give it up. But she wanted Gatsby's lifestyle. She was a party girl.

Ohhhh. Now I have to read the bood again.

Gatz was his name from his low class no money past. He needed to be somebody and needed a "better name" to do it. Gatsby was the ultimate "self-made man," including his family name.

The heat of the day has several purposes. First, it contrasts Gatsby's cool. Daisy even says something to the effect that "you always look so cool." It's also the chapter where Tom and Gatsby's conflict comes to a head, so the plot really "heats up," and thus setting it in a chapter filled with people who are hot and irritable makes it more so.

Daisy is honestly conflicted between the noble and chivalrous heart of poor Gatsby and the cruel and rotten heart of Tom. Gatsby made his money illegally and is not truly who he purports to be; he is "new money" but he did what he did because of his love for Daisy. He is dishonest but trustworthy. Tom is "old money" and didn't do anything for his wealth except to be born into the right family. He is cruel, mean, bigoted and untrustworthy, but is viewed by society as a "catch" because he comes from such a high class family. Daisy is torn between them because she loves both worlds, the sincere but poor James Gatz and the elite rich world into which she was born.

It's a great great book. I hope this helps!
