this is regarding canadian law only. someone posted the link before confirming it but now i cannot find it. can someone help.

According to the Tenant Protection Act The clause "no pets", as well as "no smoking", is completely void UNLESS your landlord can some how prove that it is a danger. Please keep in mind that this is the law in Ontario, I am not sure about other provinces/territories. If you have anymore questions, visit the Ontario Residential Housing Tribunal Website.

I'm not sure of any other law than if you are disabled: for example blind, problem with walking, or elderly. Another reason is for protection, but only if the law states that it is necessary in writing. This of course is Americas' Law, I would hope Canada would be just as lawful!!!
