If you read carefully he meant that the US always makes many mistakes to start with before doing something right !
Now just look at what is happening in the world and make YOUR choice to say if it's true or not !!!

Churchill was a great politician with a big a** !!! Therefore I assume most of his talents were accumulated in his butt! But it's very true that the US does not have a long history and plays a fool in the international scenes. The World Wars I & II became a great opportunity for the British to get back their control over this once colony of Britain. If you follow up more closely US has just become a hated puppet regime as in the case of Israel.

Within the context of his speech, it is understandible. However, it is in error.

America could have entered the war earlier, but in terms of history, we have usually been the leader.

Look to the war against the Barbary Pirates. Europe was content to pay tribute to the muslim priates. America chose to not pay tribute, but instead led the fight to end the barbarism and piracy of these early terrorists. Eventually Europe followed our lead, and the pirate coast was smashed.

The USA led the way for the formation of NATO, the relief effort of Berlin during the siege, we rebuilt the European rail system in the 60's, we rebuilt the factories of Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, and China, we gave other nations the means of self-defense.

I disagree with Churchill on this one.

i reckon unfair. particularly unfair to apply it now as churchill has been dead for 30 years, so he can't have meant it to have any relevance to today's world unless he could see into the future.

eh... I think many things Churchill said was in sort of a "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" kind of way... but I think it all too often works this way for every country... and government in general... maybe even humans in general...

so, I don't know how harshly he may have meant it, I doubt it was very harshly, but I think it's an interesting point...

False, even after they explore all other avenues they might still fail to do the right thing, but just go back to the first wrong option and try again. Gulf war 1, gulf war 2.......
