Mulch well for the winter in case you are wrong. Wait until spring, when it should bloom with others in your area. You should see many buds fairly early in the spring. If it doesn't get new leaves or blossoms, it's dead.

Use your thumbnail to scrape away a little strip of bark on the trunk or a branch. If the bark scrapes back easily and the exposed tissue is pale green, the tree is alive. If it's hard to scrape and the exposed tissue is beige or brown, the tree is dead.
