The LEVER is a rigid bar which is free to turn about a fixed point (fulcrum). There are many types of lever. First order lever- The load and effort are on the either side of the fulcrum; Eg:- See-saw. Second order lever- The load is between the fulcrum and the effort; Eg:- Nut-cracker. Third order lever- the effort acts between the fulcrum and the load; Eg:- Knife. The PULLEY consists of a wheel with a grooved rim. The wheel is supported within a frame called a BLOCK and is free to rotate about a central axis. The pulley is commonly used for lifting loads. A single fixed pulley acts as a first order lever. (A single fixed pulley does not increase or decrease force).
