Birth control pills aka "the pill" is a prescription medication that prevents pregnancy. For the most part these pills are usually combination pills meaning that they have two medicines in them. These medicines are estrogen and progesterone and control the uterus and ovaries. When used to prevent pregnancy these medications prevent ovulation. The pill also works by thickening the mucus around the cervix which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and reach any eggs which may have been released. The pill can also affect the uterus lining making it difficult for an egg to adhere to it.

The pill can also be used to treat certain medical conditions such as fibroid. When used for this the idea is that the medicines present in the pill will shrink the fibroid. Also the pill maybe used for someone who has an irregular menstrual cycle. With the pill depending on the specific type whether it is a 28-day pack, 21-day pack meaning that every 28/21 days you would proceed mense. The pill may also be used as Plan B (emergency contraception) if unprotected sex has occured. This pill must be taken w/in 72 hrs to be most effective and works by preventing the release of an egg and incidentally conception. Keep in mind if an egg has been released already than Plan B will be ineffective

As of now they have numerous brands of the pill. They also have the patch which does the same thing however you just adhere it to your skin. They also have a ring which you vaginally insert. Same concept just different route.
