I was wondering what will happen if you breed a dog and a cat or lets say a dog and a rat, what will come out?

A "dot" and a "rag".
No, seriously, in most cases animals need to be of the same species (not "family" as a previous answer stated) to be able to produce offspring. However some species of the same genus can mate with each other and produce offspring, such as horses and donkeys, lions and tigers, some smaller cat species, dogs and wolves etc. Mostly the interspecies breed is infertile. This possibility is probably not as unnatural as one think but might rather point out that our (scientists') definition of a species as the basic classification unit of life, still contains elements of artificiality.
Your mentioned species are not known to interbreed, though.

Animals have to be of the same family before they can breed, like different types of cat, dog etc. Therefore cat and dog, dog and rat combinations wouldn't work.

In nature this would never happen so leave nature alone to survive the way it was supposed to be. Look at mankind with the mixing and the interbreeding races where all the loose ends become one and trying cloning now to do What? Be God ? all I can say is as it says in the Bible that each unto his own means be with the race you are in and stay there too.I am not a religious nut, so do not come back with smart*** replies. You can be friends, & be as one with your own kind when it comes to being married etc and raising young ones. If it were meant to be then mixing cat with dog and elephant with whatever then it would happen, but think of all the destructive blood disorders we as humans are meeting with now as the world is mixing and becoming a race of "who are we's?".

They are biologically incompatible. You might be able to combine their DNA at a sub-molecular level, if you're a mad scientist, though.
