Informally, a function f has limit L at a point p when we can make the value of f as close to L as we want, by taking points close enough to p.
lim f(x) = L
x-->p

A Limit is a value to which the function will tend to over a large enough time. This may be periodical or asymptotic.

Generally speaking is a function gets closer and closer to a value but never quite reaches it, then that value is its limit.

Look at the graph for tan and you'll notice several asymptotes.

consider the function defined by the equation
f(x)=3x+1
and assign some values to x near, but not equal,to a specific number,says 2.for each value of x in the neighborhood of 2, we compute the correspoinding value of y.
3x+1=7 as x is to 2
We may also say that" the limit of (3x+1) as x approches 2 is 7".
In symbol,we write this as
lim (3x + 1)=7
xapproaches2
from the discussion above ,we may formulate the ff definition of the limit of function.
