The movement of the character is drawn frame by frame, and then filmed to look continuous. Sometimes just a 1 minute animation can come from several sheets of paper or frames.

Cartoon animation is a bunch of drawings with a little movement in each then basically "flipped" to cause animation.
U can also animate a lamp by taking a pic, then move it slightly take another then convert that together and run it.

if you want to try it out yourself you can download animation programs for the PC. but you can also make a crude little animation, just so you get the idea:
take a thick book (like a school textbook) and put it down on the table. now open it on one of the last pages and draw a little stick-man in one of the corners. then, let the page above the page you drew on fall down, so that you can see your little stick man shine thru the page, now trace the stick-man, but change him slighty - like move his arm a little bit. keep on dropping new pages, tracing and changing slightly. then after about 20-?? pages, close te book. pinch the corner between your index and thumb and sliiiiide your thumb up against the edge of the book so that you're flipping thru the pages from the bottom to the top. you will see your little stick-man making his moves! I used to draw long elaborate stories in most of my text books, hehe

You suppose that a person is walking and you are clicking his photographs continuously. Then, when you go through these photographs at the full speed, it will seem as if you are seeing the person walking. This is what is done in animation.
