I would say something bold which doesn't just blend in with the colour of the shirt. How about a purple / blue? I guess it depends on what colour "light" is and where you're going?

as a rule, the tie should have atleast one color that is your shirt;s color... wrt to trends try bold stripes combination of shirt color and a same tone bright, 1/2" stripes,,,, if its more casual then go for checks and if it is sharper that vertical stripes (if you can get hem). would have helped if you would have mentioned the colors ofsuit and shirt and the occasion (business/casual/evening)

go with a 2 tone ... that complements both your coat and shirt. make sure to where a pair of slacks that are dark preferibly black
