NO.
When you sign up for an account most will provide you free of charge (Except for the Ts&Cs clauses with regards to cancelation) a USB ADSL or Cable modem for connection to the broadband service.
If possible though, get a broadband router. This connects to your PC via a lan port (RJ45 socket) so you will need to make sure your PC has one and it has a built in broadband (ADSL or Cable) modem.
Why is this better ? Because it should have a built in firewall. This will mean you won't have to worry about installing one on each device you connect up and it frees resources on the PC.

When you apply for Broadband, the internet service provider you have chosen will arrange for your line in the telephone exchange to be altered. They will normally send you a USB modem for use when the line has been altered, and a filter for connection to BT socket, to connect the modem to, with the other socket used for the telephone, hence you can use both at the same time. So no you will not need a standard 56K modem as that is for dial up only. If you want to go wireless, you can purchase a modem router for about £70, and providing your PC or laptop is wirelessly enabled, you can connect yours and other PC/Laptops in the property to the broadband supply at the same time. Hope this helps.

Having an internet connection you need to subscribe a broadband access to any internet provider that is availble in your place. Once they install already your broadband access, the internet service provider itself will be the one to provide you a specific modem that suite in their system. You don't need to worry or you don't need to provide your self a standard modem because they will be the one to provide and configure it in your computer.

To get Broadband all you need is

1. an ISP that offers the service.
2. A telephone line, or cable.
3. Contact the ISP you want to go with, they will check that your line is up to the job. If it is then they will usually send you out a DSL modem/router.

after that you just need to plug it all together.

you do not need to have any existing modem services.

No.

You might need to get a router, depending on the supplier and the type of broadband, and you will need an NIC or Ethernet socket. Most PCs bought in the last few years will have one already, if not you can get an NIC card from a PC shop for about £10.

No. It is not absoulutely necessary to have a modem. Although you may need to have a LAN Card (aka NIC). Most motherboards today offer on board LAN so I don't think this should be a problem at all. Anyways, If you need a LAN card, you can pick one up for Rs. 750 plus (In B'lore AFAIK)
