The energy progating would cause an electrial disturbance that would turn on electrical appliences for about 5 sec, but it would be so much it would fry them.

Still skeptical, consider how a radio station works it sends out small waves at certain frequencies. Thus, it is sending some energy and this is how you can detect it on your radio but the the amplitude on their waves is way smaller.
