Pollution is a big factor, but also the Earth's tilt has been steadily reducing for at least 4000 years. The northern passage, which stayed frozen for the majority of the year, was also in the earth's shadow during the mid-winter months. That is no longer the case. The Arctic and Antarctic circles have been shrinking, though the process seems of have gotten faster in the last 100 years. The end result with be no extreme winters or summers, in another 200 years.

The average temperature of 'winter' is relevant only to a particular region and climate period. What is 'normal' in Minnesota, during the 1920's, might be considered 'extreme' or 'harsh' only 50 years later. Also, 'winter', and every other season, adjusts itself in relation to the climatic repercussions of the other seasons. Winters are much shorter or non-existent because of seasonal permutations in Spring (longer, rainer) Summer (shorter, not as hot) and Autumn (longer, cooler but not as cold). Harsh winters are very much connected to periods of intense hot summers, with spring and fall being relatively mild buffer seasons. The seasons, like many of the Earth's ecological processes, remain static only within the imagination of humans.

Its funny, but the people who go on about global warming are the same people who 30 years ago told us that we were headed for global freezing....
The planet changes it always has and always will, there used to be lions in Britain 1000's or years ago then it was freezing here, then it became hot again and so it goes..
