A 14 pound lump hammer through the drive's casing is the easy way, or for a bit more finess undo the screws that hold the case together first and smash the internal disks with a hammer. Really ! The only way to guarantee the data cannot be read from the disk is to physically destroy the disk platters, just removing the read/write heads or the electronics won't do it and 'erasing' or formatting the drive won't do it either. A very powerfull magnet may do it but I wouldn't like to guarantee it.
Of course you could take the Braniac approach and blow-it up in a caravan - a lot more satisfying and fun too !

If you mean like, "destroy" as in, you have stuff on it that you don't want other people to see, or you don't want the information on it anymore, than a magnetic will most likely wipe all the information off of it.
But if you mean dispose of it then you could find a place that takes computer hardware and "recycles" or gets rid of it. Or you can give it to a comeputer place and they can take it and maybe use it.

to destroy the data on the disk you can use a special program which basically writes over all the stored tracks, this will prevent others recovering your data, a simply reformat will not destroy the data completely.
As for the destruction of the disk itself, you really should take it to a company which deals with electronic waste, as the drive will contain several dangerous chemicals which have to be delt with correctly.
alternatively stick it in a fire and burn it..*S*

actually the best way is to pull out the hammer and screwdriver ..honestly... just rip it to shreds..... and throw away in several different containers over several days if you can.....data recovery and computer forensics are quite adept at recovering data from any hard drives.... insineration is acceptable, but you really need it hot. good luck with that:)
