My slider is 9 yrs old, has eaten varied diet but when recently lost appetite, we got a new lamp, a more powerful water heater and it was recommended to try live fish. Sheldon loves the fish, seems healthy now and eats goldfish with extreme enthusiasm and now refuses to eat anything else. Shall I stop with the fish and only offer other things? This turtle LOVES the fish, but I want to ensure a varied diet. Advice welcome.

Fish, worms, bugs, etc. form the basis of the wild diet with some aquatic plants thrown in as they get older.

Try offering fish only once a week with some other foods in between. In general, an adult turtle should only get fed every 2-3 days anyway to prevent obesity.

Oddly enough, my turtles gave up on fish. The fish I've had have been in the tank for a little over a year. I think they are lazy and know that the pellets are easier.

I don't think that him eating only goldfish will end up hurting him. Especially if he seems healthy and lively. I'd prolly keep feeding him goldfish as often as he wants to munch on them. I don't suggest starving him to force him to eat other things.

Goldfish are relatively slow and easy to catch compared to other fish, but they are not healthy for your turtle as a long term diet. They are too fatty and have sharp spines in their fins.

Try minnows, danios, tiger barbs, guppies or tuna fish, instead. Tuna fish have a strong odor and may be most tempting to your turtle if he hasn't felt like eating much.

Goldfish are undesirable for turtles with the exception of being fatty additionally they include Thiaminase which leads to Vita B1 deficiency contained in the longer time period. Guppies are extra secure and really user-friendly to reproduce.

keep the water temp lower and offer no food for 3 days.
then try raw chicken pieces cut to bite size morsel. leave it in the tank for 3 hours and see if it's gone. if not wait another day and if possible go catch a crawdad and leave that in its tank. even if he doesn't eat the crawfish, leave it in the bowl. the ceawfish will clean up scraps making aquarium cleaner. also try snails, you can get them at most fish stores or petsmart. If all fail, keep feeding goldfish.
also buy duckweed from pet store, mine gobble it up.

I think it may have something to do with you turtles sight. turtles see bright colors very well. Try a food that is orange or red in color and smells very fishy. This should work.
