It means that everybody contained in the global is largely 5 relationships faraway from every person else (making a complete of six). "Six tiers of separation is the hypothesis that any one in the global would nicely be correct to the different individual in the global through a series of friends without better than 5 intermediaries. The hypothesis replaced into first proposed in 1929 through the Hungarian author Karinthy Frigyes in a short tale said as Chains. the idea is depending on the concept that the variety of friends grows exponentially with the variety of hyperlinks contained in the chain, and so really a small variety of hyperlinks is needed for the set of friends to develop into the entire human inhabitants. through extension, a similar time period is oftentimes used to describe the different placing in which some variety of link exists between individual entities in a large set. for example, "see also" hyperlinks in a dictionary get proper of entry to would factor the reader to different entries interior a similar dictionary; after following really six such hyperlinks, the reader could probably get to any note contained in the dictionary that has a link to it. in this particular case of a dictionary, that's typically said as the six hyperlinks rule."-Wikipedia

It's the number of "hops" you take to get from one thing to another.

They say that you can find a connection from one person to every other person on the planet using 6 degrees of separation.

A knows B who knows C who knows ....... down to F and with different people at stages B to F you can get to anyone on the planet

Any 2 people in the world can be connected through 6(or less) other people, if you try hard enough. Its just a theory, but you can test it on Myspace.

It goes like this:

I have a friend - which means my friend is separated from me by 1 degree.

My friend's friend - that person is separated from me by 2 degrees.

My friend's friend also has a friend - that person is separated from me by 3 degrees.

And so on and so forth until you get to the 6th degree of separation.
