You could well be right, certainly from a drama point of view. Mesmerising stuff.

I have never seen any other film where drama pours so profusely out of the pores of the actors. There are three particular examples where this is the case, but where the actors (Al Pacino (Twice) and Diane Keaton (Once)) seem to to be doing nothing: 1) Michael brings Kate to meet the family for the first time. When Michael tells Kate about Lucabrazzi and his father, Kate barely moves - her jaw drops a bit, but the emotion coming out of her exceeds any overt expression she might make. The other two with Al Pacino are in the second film, where the Senator criticises Michael's family and where Kate says she had an abortion. The emotional expression is hightened, even extreme in either case, but the verbal and physical expression of that emotion is subtle and understated. These are just 3 examples of drama in two films which are loaded with great acting which you will not find in any other film. (I don't think Godfather part 3 was anywhere near as subtle)

Having said all that, I think that the very best film ever made was 2001: A Space Odyssey. This is mainly because of the photograpy which was undoubtedly at the forefront of what was possible and certainly ahead of it's time, ahead of any of it's contemporaries. i would venture to suggest that it even beats (or is at least equals) anything produced today.

The subtle storyline is another reason. I have never come across any other film where the story starts off with relatively simple images and builds up to a level of complexity which is at times startling but still subtle. At the same time, you are never told outright what the story is really all about. You have to work it out for yourself. For that reason, many people don't like it, but it deserves to be in any list of the Best Films Ever.

Considering the type of technology available at the time the film was made, High Noon is the best of all time.

The Italian Job.
Not the crappy modern remake. I'm talking about the original from the 1960's with Michael Caine and Benny Hill.
