yes we do, but sometimes speed is more important than precision. As long as the message gets across. That is the purpose of language after all isnt it??

Well yes, there are many in the modern world who have gladly accepted the 'text' version of the language....it's fine for a text message, an email to an old pal and even on Y! answers.
But I wouldn't appreciate reading a book or a newspaper or even browsing through a site written like that. Same goes for work-related emails. So for me, if its meant informally, the text language is fine.
But nowadays, schools are letting students use the text version to answer exams, and I'm horrified by that - it's one thing when you know the proper rules of the language and then cut short for convenience, but it's entirely different when you're raising the next generation to butcher it from the get go. They wouldn't know what grammar and spelling are, and perhaps what's worse is, they wouldn't care. That makes me cringe.

This is not a grammar and spelling course. People are here to ask or answer question. The more you answer the higher you go up in levels. When you're trying to answer as many question as you can sometimes grammar and spelling fall to the wayside.
Believe me I know, after going back on some of my answers, I have seen how I butchered the English language. Who would have ever guessed, I Aced my College Language course?

I certaily care! Little wonder many companies will not employ school leavers as they simply don't have it any more and half of them can't even read and write properly. It seems that the schools are gradually doing away with exams and simply passing the students on attendance and other non-exemplary aspects. I see the education system in Australia is falling apart as the ABC did a special on this subject some time ago and approached a group of 18 year old students and asked them privately how do they spell the capitol of Australia. They all spelled it S.Y.D.N.E.Y (Canberra is the capitol) little wonder many prospective employers set their own exams for school leavers applying for jobs

I agree with you that the English language takes a beating on this site. I too get frustrated at the disregard for spelling and grammar that is so rampant here. What can one do?

people have been divided by the laguage that they speak. personally, i am in favor of people who had tried hard to interact even if they are having a hard time doing it. I dont care about grammar or spelling as long as they made their point and I understand them. what matters to me is the message and not how it is written.
