GEOMAG is the brand name of a toy construction system created in 1998, consisting primarily of nickel-plated steel balls (spheres) and short connecting sticks with a magnet on each end (rods).

Models are constructed by magnetically connecting the rods and spheres together in a lattice formation. Homemade experiments show that each stick can produce up to roughly 4.116N of force when attracting iron.

GEOMAG is a versatile magnetic construction set composed of magnetic rods and steel spheres. With these two basic elements, an infinite number of geometric shapes and structures can intuitively be built. GEOMAG structures can easily be built and easily taken apart - thus providing young builders with more opportunities to let their imagination take shape. They teach children important lessons about problem solving, creativity, math, physics, and much more. GEOMAG doesn't break, doesn't make noise, and keeps kids entained for hours on end.
GEOMAG was named the 2005 Toy of the Year by the Toy Industry Association.

Magnetix is a construction toy imported and sold by Rose Art Industries, Inc. from September 2003 on. Magnetix uses plastic building pieces that have magnets built into them and can be connected together with metal balls. According to TD Monthly, a trade magazine for the toy industry, Magnetix sets are among the top 10 most-wanted building sets, and are top sellers on Web sites including Amazon.com, KBToys.com, and Walmart.com. Magnetix was nominated for 2005 Activity Toy of the Year by the Toy Industry Association, and was included in the Hot Dozen list for 2005 published by Toy Wishes.

Price, quality and availability are the three that spring to mind. Geomag are more expensive than Magnetix, but they seem to be better quality. Magnetix seem to be more readily available, at least where I live in Hampshire.

That aside, I personally think the quality of the Geomag parts is much better than the Magnetix stuff, but the Magnetix comes with many different shaped parts, Geomag just seems to be the standard rods, balls and plates.

Price? Magentix was introduced before Geomag and the pieces are plastic (apart from the neodymium magnetic spheres) whereas Geomag are more magnetic rods and balls. Magnetix was voted in the Top 10 toys by the trade and Geomag was named toy of the year 2005.
