I think you are actually referring to a television play called "What we did on our holidays" it starred ex-Eastender actor Shane Rirchie, and was set in Malta. It was a tale about a man who was stationed in Malta during the war, and he fathered a child with a Maltese girl. He returned to Malta with his wife, son (Shane Ritchie) and daughter-in-law to track down his long lost son.
It was quite good to watch as you got to see quite a lot of Malta (I was out in Malta for a holiday last year by the way)
