Your rabbit did that because it's natural in the wild for male rabbits to fight to the dealth, you can't even put 2 fixed male rabbits together they will fight untill the better man wins.

Two Bucks probably BOYS is other words
PAIRING RABBITS
I mentioned earlier that rabbits are happier with company. Firstly, Guinea Pigs and rabbits do not always make good company for each other. Rabbits can be very aggressive towards guinea pigs, causing dreadful wounds and even killing them, so do be careful and vigilante if trying to do this.
Generally Buck rabbits do not get on well together even when both are neutered.
Female rabbits are usually fine if kept together from very young.
A doe and a neutered buck are a better pairing, but again, be careful when introducing them to each other. Fur will usually fly initially but very rarely is any damage done. Rabbits can take time to be comfortable with each other so they may need to be introduced a few times before you're happy to leave them together for good.

oh.
that is so sad
you did not say if they were males or females and how long they had lived together .
Rabbits are very terretorial animals , when they become mature .
in the wild a male rabbit will attack ,all other males in his territory.
and see them off his patch.
A femal rabbit will attack another female, .if she is a stranger to her hutch (group)
She may also attack a male rabbit, if she is not in season, and he is introduced to her hutch.
It may be safer to keep your pet rabbits in seperate hutches .
in summer they can be let out into a run together ,but not into each others hutches .
I am really sorry your brothers rabbit was killed , that was a horrible thing to happen ,
in nature that is how rabbits are.
If your rabbit is male , it may help ,if he is neutered ,
in case of future encounteres ,with another male rabbit .
This is a simple operation , your vet will advise you on this .
I hope these sites will be helpful for you

Was the attacker female? Female rabbits tend to attack other male rabbits ( can be lethal ) when they are hormonal. If the rabbit is female, you may want to get it fixed if u havent already. If this isnt the problem you may want to take your rabbit to the vet, something could be wrong cauing the aggression.
