ESL stands for English as a Second Language. Normally refered to the English spoken by an individual of non English speaking country, while residing in the 'native' English speaking country.
Often the term is confused with EFL or English as a Foreign Language. EFL is refered to the English spoken by a non native speaker while residing in his or her own country or any other non-English speaking country, hence a foreign language.
