I have been accused of imbuing my kitten with human type feelings. But I am certain that he sometimes feels; happy, sad, cross, lonely, playful etc... and that I can tell due to the way he behaves. What do you reckon?

yea just like you can tell when people are sad without asking them.. or without them telling you.. it's a feeling you get... that they're not acting like their usual self...

Sometimes it is difficult to tell exactly how an animal feels which can be frustating when you have a grumbling labrador standing in front of you with no more than a look of expectation. What he wants can range from food (although labradors always want food), to a game or just simply because he knows it annoys you. I do believe however that once you get to know an animal that you can tell how an animal is generally feeling by its behaviour although you might not know precisely what. A prolonged stare at the sandwich that you are eating might be an exception. Especially if its drooling.

Yes, you can, I have 5 dogs and they are mostly happy dogs, but one of them, Bronson, gets the blues a couple of times a month, he lays down, sighs and just looks at you. These are called his sad days, - the rest of the time he is really happy.

I also have four cats and one of them, Felix, is almost always bad tempered and cross, but the kitten Pudding, is always happy and playful.

Feelings are caused by chemicals in your body, the hormones your cat makes are identical to yours. If you take adrenaline out of a cat and inject it into you, you'll get an adrenaline rush.
People who say that animals don't have feelings at all, or if they do they are different from human feelings, are ignoring the fact that we are apes.

The only real difference between us all is that we have verbal language and can say how we feel.
You are right. Animals feel emotions. And pain, or contentment, or fear probably feels the same to them as it does to us. (We use similar body language and facial expressions to show pain and fear too.)
The evidence suggest it does, not that their feelings are different.

I know I can tell whatever mood my 5 year old staffy is in ,he gets jealus if I have freinds round and he dont get all the attention, he sulks if he dont get his own way, does things to wind me up,he can sense when I'm happy sad, exited ,ill, or even when I get lame, he knows when not to pull me ,I understand him,(Henri)like he understands me.he does get fed up and mopes about if he dont get any interaction with humans, and his buddies, (ie) a yorkie, an Irish fekker of a staff,my daughter has ,so yes they can tell, it's all in the input you give your pet.!!!

Bunnies can get sad or happy. They binky ( jump) when happy,if in pain- will hunch up and face the wall, running circles round you - love. They have amazing personalities and are great to watch. I have four and foster rabbits too. Never a dull moment.

Defo!! I think that if animals are sad or lonely they become very withdrawn. They may sleep lots or not bother running around. If they're happy theyre more playful and affectionate.

When my pet monkey gets excited, he does the running man and likes to beat-box. He even drew plans for a discoteque out back once, when he thought he'd won the bingo. But they didn't say he had to wear a tie to qualify. He was down for a week, and kept annoying us with his cello playing and blues guitar riffs.

Anyone with cats or dogs can tell you that they know what their pet is feeling. My dog lets me know she is happy by bouncing up and down and spinning in circles. When she is sad she lays down with her head between her paws and just stares at me. Every animal has emotions we just do not understand all of their signs.
