Sounds to me like you may have been hit by lightening which perhaps fried your modem .... If it's an internal one ... remove the side off your computer (unplug it first of course) and the card where your telephone line plug into is your modem .... you could try undoing the screw holding the modem in and removing the modem ... and try putting it into another of the "white slots" you see replace the screw then turn the computer back on .,... if it doesn't recognise NEW HARDWARE chances are it's dead .... go to your local Computer store and buy another one for about $15.00

Do you have a external modem or a internal one.
Anyhow if it is not getting detected there are possibilities of the modem being koncked.
If it is a external modem try it with a different PC.
If it is an internal modem then u have a chance to install a new external modem.
Donot keep the phone line connected to your modem during lighting and tunder this damages the modem and sometimes even your mother board

One of this may work:
1- Try to uninstall the driver using device manager and then re-install the driver using its own driver cd.
2- First connect to the internet, Go to device manager, Go to modems, right click on it and choose update. Sometimes there are new dirivers at microsoft website.
3- If your modem is internal, Try to remove it from its pci slot and then plug it in another pci slot.
4- If your modem is onboard you should use your motherboard's driver CD
5- if you still have problems send a message to me including your modem model so I can help you in a better way

It sounds like it might be a driver problem.First,go to control panel, system, modems.click on update or find best driver for device, etc. If the driver is not in the windows database, then you can go to driverguide.com and find it for free. You can also check the manufacturer's support website, etc. Also, you can see if your computer is even recognizing the modem by "querying" it-basically having the computer talk to the modem to see if it has a problem, etc.
