Wonderful, wonderful movie. A lesson in film-making. I know a lot of people won't be able to see it for what it is because of the supernatural/horror elements (which are usually a turn-off for film snobs), but the movie is just extremely well-made.
Consider the fact that Linney's character's true conflict is not winning the trial, but a satisfyingly complex internal struggle which I will not name so as not to spoil the movie. Or the plethora of food for thought that the movie offers, regarding existentialist issues of perception vs. objective truth, and social issues of liability and responsibility.
Some very interesting scenes that find ways to express things in subtle and creative ways without spelling them out. And an incredible and ballsy performance by Jennifer Carpenter, which takes Linda Blair's possession to a whole new level. Also, notice how a key dramatic monologue is presented, contrary to what we might expect, with no sentimental music in the background. The cinematography is also great. I was reminded of Dario Argento's vivid colors in Suspiria on more than one occasion.
Although it's not the focus of the film, the movie also offers a few very cool scare moments, and seeing Emily possessed is terrifying.
This is my favorite "underdog" movie of the year so far.

First of all: The movie is based on facts. And the fact is that, some girl died and she behaved in a perticular way in the last few days she lived. Now, the Father thinks she was possed by the demon, others think she was mentaly ill. The interesting thing here to notice is that, the movie does not claim the presence of a demon or the possession of a girl by it. Nothing shown in the movie is a concrete proof of possession. For example, she may have got the puncture wounds in her palms(the Father believes this to be the sign of meeting with Mary) while crossing the fence. The movie leaves this controversy to the end unresolved because there is no way to prove that she was actually possessed. Second of all: There are no such things as demons or possession. So, cheer up!

Uh... it's ok...freaky...yet there are more freaky movies than this like The Exorcist...
After watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose, I kept on waking up every frickin' 3AM for I think a whole week

I think that even though it was a bit slow, it was scarier than The Exorcist because if you actually look into the whole exorcism topic, Emily Rose's events were WAY more believable and possible than, for example, turning your head 360 degrees (as in the Exorcist).
Some scenes were quite good thanks to the talented acting and good directing and editing. I think it was shot well and creepy enough without going over-board.

I was bored with it, one of those that I almost fell asleep on.
Not scary, really not even interesting.
It can't compare in any way to the Exorcist, (made in 1973 and still scares the pants off most).

I didn't like it at all (sorry) I thought it was very slow. I didn't think it was scary either.
Neither stories this or the exorcist are really believable but years ago when I watched the exorcist it scared the poop right out of me.

Did see it. Liked the fact it was not overly creepy despite the topic, however it was creepy enough. :-) Would recommend it.
