Leave the UK because it is the epicentre of the big suck. Start something cultural and interesting: magazine, gallery, etc. Build your rythms around this. Only work with people you enjoy or find interesting. I left the 'race' and now do my own thing. It is great getting up in the morning and not having to face a boss, and being able to giggle as I walk past the sad faces marching to the tube.

Yes, consider becoming a comedy writer.. or stand up performer.. These are very hard, but if you can write jokes, or gags, you can do pretty well.. But you'd have to move to Los Angeles.. And if you need to sustain yourself while doing this, consider working as an extra in Television productions. Not exactly the rat race, interesting work, and you'd meet creative, intelligent, unusual people.

I chucked in my managerial job and joined a local bus company who trained me to get my PCV licence and for the past 5 years I have been happy driving around and getting paid for it.
I don't earn a fortune but enough to fund my chosen lifestyle without being in the rat race and I can honestly say I have never been happier.

Yes, I know what you mean, we moved to the country, built our own very small house, did some part-time work and then retired. We have a garden grow our own fruit and veg. There's less people in our town...pop 400..not too far from bigger towns. There's much less crime, the air is cleaner. The best thing we ever did. I say move, but do your homework first.

Don't participate. You can still keep your job, but do things that make you happy. Decorate your home in a manner that suits you.
Dress for yourself, not others. Don't be brainwashed into thinking that life follows a predetermined path. Make your own path. Own your life.
