My 8 year old is set on having a guitar, prob is, I cant play one and wouldnt know where to start, I cant afford the time or money to take her for lessons so what should i do? Is there DVD's or books or anything for kids. Also she wants an electric one, am i correct in thinking she'll have to learn on an acoustic one first?

Whatever you recommend, she'll go for the electric one. Been there. It would be best if she could take lessons, but if she's committed enough she can learn from books, too. I guess you could find stuff on book selling sites. I say, trust her enthusiasm. If she doesn't commit, you can use the incident as evidence against her future demands. :P

Hi. There are lots of things to consider before buying her a guitar.
How serious is she about playing?
Will she be playing in a years time?
How can you make it fun?
Does she just want it because a friend does?

First off if your daughter will need to spend about 30mins each practicing at first. Will she want to commit to that everyday? Try and find out WHY she wants to play the guitar and explain it will take lots of practise to become good.
You can always try and find a 2nd hand guitar or if you go to a music store (not argos) they would be glad to find one in your price range. Alot of stores offer a trade in system if you want to sell your old guitar also.
She will probally need a smaller guitar than adult size so it probally will be cheaper and if she continues playing she can trade this size in when shes older and get an full size guitar.
You dont need to learn acoustic first but I would reccomend it. First due to the fact that it will be much cheaper to just get an acoustic guitar rather than an electric (with amp). an acoustic wont be as loud . If she really wants an electric tell her that she will get one if she becomes good enough on the acoustic, that could also encourage her to play (it worked on me) besides its best to learn both.
There are lots of books to learn from look for your nearest music store or a large book store like waterstones etc would have some. But I would try to find a teacher for a lesson just once a week.

She doesn't have to learn an acoustic first, but it would be better if she did. She is eight years old, and unless you have given birth to some sort of freak, she presumably has small hands. Get her a reasonbable quality nylon strung 3/4 size acoustic guitar. The action will be soft and easy to play and it will be relatively easy to get a nice sound. She will make a horrible noise with a full size electric (and amplifier) and will end up stopping in frustration....but not before she has driven the rest of the household absolutely insane with the racket.

you can get kids books which will be simple for you to work through with her, she should definateley start on an acoustic, and if your not sure about her keeping it up then you can pick up junior guitars from around 20 pounds, just bear in mind that at only 8 she wont have a lot of strength in her fingers and may find it difficult at first.

I taoght myself to play on an electric (an in-expensive Fender Squire-Strat) and while it might have taken me longer to learn it was more fun as I got to learn my way. You can get guitar packages like the one mentioned that cone with books and/or DVD's to help you to teach yourself. As long as your gaughter has the patience to practise all will be ok.
Also I dont think that you need to learn on an accoustic. Its probably easier but if you learn the harder way (like I did) then it will be easier to switch to the accoustic later on.
Thats how I found it anyway. Good luck and cheers.

Why don't you try her school? Her music teacher may play and be willing to give her lessons at lunch time. (My sons teacher did this). The teacher may know some one who is willing to teach your daughter and will accept barter IE. will teach your daughter if you for example knit them a sweater. The music teacher may also know some one who is selling or willing to lend out a gituar for your daughter to try. Hope she goes well with it.

no she doesn't have to learn on accoustic first, it's actually far easier to learn on electric. I wouldn't know what to get her but whatever you do don't buy her a pink one. lol.
